Why Am I Fat
Why Am I Fat?

This question is the central theme for many over weight individuals, especially as the New Year looms.  Unfortunately, a simple solution for everyone does not exist. As someone who spends much of my time researching and writing about fitness, I have formed a few opinions.

The first, there are a number of separate causes that I believe must be considered within the umbrella of a weight condition:

Perhaps you are living sedentary lifestyle.  In this age of technological access and convenience foods, it is easy for even those genetically blessed to put on a few pounds.  If this is the cause of your weight battle, then some simple retooling and discipline might just be the lifestyle prescription.

However, for many, this is only part of the problem.  If you read scientific studies, as I consistently do, you will find emerging theories and studies on genetic and chemical factors separating the naturally thin from the obese.  What I believe we are learning is that the battle of obesity for many is not about the often touted 'fix all' lifestyle diet.  It is about a war against factors that may have little to do with discipline.  If you fall into this category, stop comparing yourself to the naturally thin. Genetics seem to play a major role in our natural reaction to food. Therefore someone who does not have to fight obesity certainly does not display greater discipline than someone who does.

The second, I think of this as an incurable medical condition.  This illness can be managed but never extinguished.  The power in this perspective is to stop looking for the unknown cure and start fighting.

Thirdly, Regardless of the cause, work with a physician that is mindful of your personal plight. The battle is yours to fight so take control by finding the help you need. Finding the right eating plan will probably not be easy. Work with experts that understand the challenge you are facing.

The weapons that will make you the last man standing are:  prayer and persistence.  If you succeed you will have overcome frustration, weakness and temptation.  Remind yourself that if it was easy, obesity would not be a leading cause of adverse health conditions.  You can succeed but if you succumb long term, you will lose more than esthetics.  Grit your teeth, tighten your fist and realize you will win with prayer, faith, and persistence.

Remember:  While this may be a life long battle, learning through the hard times will make managing your weight a lot easier.  Living healthy may not be in your genes but in you resilience. These are my thought anyway.
